A major symbol in Elizabeth Tallent's "No One's a Mystery" is the car ride that the narrator and Jack take through town. This car ride is symbolic of the journey on which Jack and the narrator find themselves. They are both present in the car; however, each one is on a very different path in life. There is some sort of relationship between the two; however, the illegitimacy of the relationship is evident when Jack pushes the narrator to the floor of the car to avoid being seen by his wife passing by in another car. The narrator believes that she and Jack will be married someday, but Jack knows that this is just the narrator's naive fantasy. So, like the car ride that is likely a brief jaunt, their life journeys are simply together for this brief moment in time.
