Bleach is Sodium Hypochlorite (NaOCl). It is made industrially by the Hooker Process where Chlorine Gas is reacted with Sodium Hydroxide in a cold electrolytic cell following the equation:
Cl2 +2NaOH -->NaCl + NaOCl +H2O
Note that chlorine is both oxidized and reduced.
- It has a 0 oxidation state as Cl2
- A Positive 1 oxidation state in NaOCl
- A Negative 1 oxidation state in NaCl
