What does Lily think will give her a "real chance" to learn how to be a beautiful fashionable girl?

   Lily believes that charm school will give her a chance to be  beautiful and fashionable.  Even though Lily has Rosaleen as a mother figure, she feels lost without her own mother.  She thinks that she needs her mother to brush her hair and to teach her how to act.  Lily tries to enroll in the charm school, but they will not allow her because she does not have a female relative who could present her with a flower in their ceremony.  This devastates Lily.  She becomes sick over it and Rosaleen is there to pick up the pieces.
