Think about Arthur's start in life in Morte d'Arthur by Thomas Malory when observing the development of his character. He started out in life as a sort of deal, to be given over at birth to fulfil a promise - a deal done between his father and Merlin the magician. Does this affect his resolve? Arthur has self-belief and hope - he steps up to the plate and calmly removes the sword from the stone. These character traits are important in a nation leader, these people must be confident. They must also be persevering as even the best of people have enemies - even if those opponents only resist through jealousy. Unfortunately, often nobles such as princes, find they have no choice but to be ruthless. Think about what Arthur orders in order to protect his own position and status, albeit in his belief that it is for the good of the nation. Leaders also need to be kept there - in the lead. To do this they rely on genuine advisors and supporters to watch their backs. Who does this for Arthur - look at how he repays them to see more of his character traits.
