Why does Edward lie and leave Bella in New Moon?

Edward leaves Bella in New Moon because he feels that she doesn't belong in his world. He feels guilty for endangering her life, and nearly stripping her of her humanity. Bella was injured and almost killed during her 18th birthday celebration because she have herself a papercut while trying to open a gift from Carlisle and Esme. Being in a house full of Vampires, Jasper, the newest and the least practiced member of the Cullen family tried to attack her. Unthinkingly, Edward shoved Bella out of the way, accidently pushing her too viciously into the glass table to stop Jasper. When Bella crashed through the table, the glass shattered and deeply wounded Bella's arm, causing more and more blood to gush out. By this point, every single Vampire in the room had to leave the room because of temptation. Edward tried to stay with her but Carlisle and Bella knew that it caused him great pain to be near her while she bled so violently. Carlisle and Bella told Edward to go outside and talk to Jasper so he wouldn't suffer. Carlisle cleaned and stitched Bella's wounds and sent her home to her father. Over the next few weeks, Edward was acting very distant and he was always distracted. Bella tried to give him his space but it turned out being a bad idea. Edward walked her up the short path and told her that he and his family was leaving Forks and that he didn't want her to come with them. He tried to completely pull her out of his world so she could live a normal human life like she should. He though it was best for her but when he left, he took everything she had with him. Bella was completely detatched from her body and extremly numb, Edward was miserable too. It was wrong for him to leave her like that but he honestly thought that he was doing the right thing. Hope this answered you question. Sorry about the length.
