This would be an excellent student writing assignment for the Guy de Maupassant short story, "The Necklace": to write an appendix or new ending and speculate what the Loisels' life would be like after the discovery of the necklace's secret. Would Madame Forestier return the money or the necklace? Would they sell the expensive necklace and share the huge sum? If so, what lessons would Mathilde and her husband learn from the harsh lesson of life? Or would Madame Forestier simply enjoy the knowledge that the diamonds that she thought were paste had been real for the past decade? Would she keep the jewels? I'd like to believe that Madame Forestier's sympathy for Mathilde's economic situation and her honest (mostly) effort displayed in returning what she thought was an expensive necklace would force Madame Forestier to financially compensate the Loisels in some manner. So maybe the Loisels would have eventually lived happily ever after after all.
