Who were the key revolutionaries that led the movements for independence in Latin America, and what were their accomplishments?

Going back a bit, one of the most important revolutionary leaders was Toussaint L'ouverture, a key leader in the Haitian revolution (then the French colony Saint-Domingue). The Haitian revolution (1791-1804) was motivated by abolition, class and racial conflicts and was initially inspired by the French Revolution (1789-1799). France made a failed attempt to take the island back in 1801. Jean-Jacques Dessalines, an ally of L'ouverture at one time, ruled Haiti's first two years as a despot. L'ouverture was sent to France where he died in prison in 1803.

Haiti was the only nation during the slave era to permanently abolish slavery. - 71 years before America would. Haiti was the first independent Latin American nation and the first black-led post-colonial nation.  The Haitian revolution served as a model for slave rebellions and abolitionists.
