There is a wide variety of Industrial Chemist job descriptions and thousands of jobs available throughout the world. The salary of an Industrial Chemist ranges from $40,000 to $60,000 a year plus benefits. They work in areas ranging from zoos to farms to manufacturing factories. These chemists study English, Math, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Literature, History, etc. in college and should take advanced science courses in high school such as Chemistry, Calculus, and Physics. Most chemists have a Bachelor of Science in Applied Chemistry, which takes approximately 4 years of full-time college, and a Master of Applied Science Chemistry, which takes approximately 2 years of full-time college. Someone interested in becoming a chemist should enjoy scientific activities, including laboratory or fieldwork and research, be able to think logically and creatively, have aptitude for creating accurate work, be able to work well with others, and have integrity, patience, perseverance and an inquiring mind. A chemist has to be very flexible because they have to switch from working alone to working in a large team of professionals; be able to work in a lab, the field, a factory, an office, or an educational institution, perhaps all in one day; write research proposals and reports; conduct experiments to identify chemical composition and study chemical changes which occur in natural substances and processed materials; undertake research and analysis to develop and test theories, techniques and processes; develop practical applications of experiments and research findings such as for the combination of new compounds for industrial use; test products and materials and prepare specifications and standards, to ensure compliance with government health laws and quality standards; handle dangerous/hazardous chemicals and wear appropriate protective equipment; carry out cost analysis, assure stakeholders of pricing and quality when developing new substances, processes and products; participate in the marketing and financial reporting of substances, processes or product development; and supervise and coordinate the work of staff.
