In the short story, "The Necklace," by Guy de Mauppasant, Madame Loisel showed remarkable growth. She started out as a character who felt she deserved more than she had. She felt as if she was better than her family as she was growing up. She married a "low level" government official who did not give her the opportunities she thought she deserved. When he brought her the tickets in an effort to make her happy, she was belittled him by telling him to give the tickets to someone who could afford something nice to wear. Even when she go a new dress, she was not content, and had to borrow jewels in order to make herself appear to be more than she was.
After losing the necklace and dealing with the years of deprivation and degradation in order to pay the debt, she was happier. This is clear when she explains to Mme. Forrestier what had transpired and how she (Mme. Loisel) had succeeded in overcoming the problem.
