Back in 1920's people used many different kinds of transportation. The train was already popular for long distance travel in many countries. However the automobile, started to became a very popular means of transport for both local and long distance travel. For travel on water steamers and steam ships were quite common.
But it is important to note that in 1920's the total travel using animal power - that is travelling on backs of animals and on animal driven carts - continued to remain the most widely used means of transportation throughout the world.
Also, a lot of people just walked, even for long distances.
