Binary compounds are formed by a chemical reaction when two elements are combined. Compounds ending in “IDE” indicate that the compound only would be compounded by two elements. The two elements usually consist of a metal element and a non-metal element. Potassium is the name of the metal element and it is positively charged. Iodine is negatively charged and would be considered the stem. Therefore, to name the compound we take Potassium. We then drop “ine” off the word iodine and replace it with “ide” resulting in the compound Potassium Iodide.
Potassium Iodide lists as KI and is inorganic. It is in the form of a white salt and has the ability to reduce radioactive waste. It’s most common use is as a nutrient additive, put into table salt, and added to hair care products. It stimulates saliva production in animals and humans.
